The luxury sampler package

Nissan introduced the 1997 Altima early; there are no changes from the 1996 model. Early in the 1997 calendar year, however, Nissan will introduce the new 1998 Altima, with major revisions. Until then, we're relegated to this model. The Altima is quite popular, as I quickly found out, because it features many luxury amenities at a reasonable price.
The Altima I drove had a final price tag of only $22,717. That price includes destination and the two options it had; anti-lock brakes and a power sunroof. Mileage ratings from the EPA are 21 city and 29 highway. During my testing, I obtained 27 mpg. This rating was possible because of the 2.4L, 4-cylinder, 16-valve, DOHC, 150 hp engine. The engine seems sluggish on the freeway with a major tendency to downshift with most minor throttle adjustments. The problem may be a poor engine/transmission computer program.
The exterior of the Nissan Altima is reminiscent of the Infiniti J30 only on a smaller scale. The roof line slopes off into the trunk quickly, compromising some trunk space. Fortunately, trunk space is improved with the 1998 model.
Inside the Altima is where you'll find the features that make it so popular. Standard equipment on our Altima GLE were the following: leather seats, keyless entry, power mirrors, power windows, power locks, a rear seat armrest and wood-tone trim. The standard safety equipment list includes dual front airbags, side-door guard beams, energy absorbing steering column and hood buckling safety stops. All these features add up to make the Altima a very user friendly car. The ride is smooth over most roads and the Altima handles normal cornering tasks with ease. Four adults can easily ride in comfort, adding a fifth person makes the backseat tight on shoulder and hip space.
The Altima lacks personality. It is an average car in a class that features many choices. Those choices include: Mercury Mystique, Chrysler Cirrus, Pontiac Grand Am and Oldsmobile Achieva. The Altima excels in the area of value: buyers get a sample of many features you'd normally only find in a larger, more luxurious vehicle. I think the Altima is a good car but in current guise doesn't make a standout statement that some buyers are looking for.
