Toyota RAV 4

Best in Class Mini - SUV

By Steven D. Gatt

Toyota has the sport utility market blanketed and with the introduction of the new RAV4 they enter the popular mini SUV segment. Competition in this category is fierce; because companies are hoping for brand loyalty. First, you purchase a RAV4; then, upgrade to a 4Runner; and eventually end up in the luxury division's Lexus LX450.

The RAV4 is easy to drive and it never felt like it was going to tip over on the street, a1though one must remember when your driving a RAV4 you are not driving a car. They don't corner like a Corvette and aren't meant to do so. Many frivolous lawsuits have been brought by drivers claiming a manufacturers defect when in reality it is driver error.

The Toyota RAV4 handling is excellent with quick, responsive steering. For those interested, their would be no problem taking the RAV4 off road: it has the clearance to make it over most reasonable rocks. It also has a push button 4 wheel-drive system. The RAV4 has a comfortable step in height so it is not difficult to get in and out of.

The interior is very well appointed and is car-like in most of its' design features. Dual airbags are a standard safety equipment. Power comes from a 2.0 liter DOHC, 16 valve in-line, 4-cylinder engine. It produces 120 hp, plenty for around town but it is a little weak past 70mph. The RAV4 is geared for a large torque band, for off-road capabilities, torque is rated at 125 lb-ft.

Mileage figures from the EPA are 22 city/ 27 highway. During our week of testing we achieved 24 mpg. Tire and engine noise is noticeable but not excessive. Other vehicles in this segment include the Jeep Wrangler, Suzuki X90, and the Geo Tracker. The new Toyota bests them all in overall comfort, quality feel, and value.

While the $18,508 price may seem high it really isn't in comparison to the class which ranges from $16,000 base prices to well equipped vehicles over $20,000. For comparison, a compact sport utility like the Chevy Blazer has a base price of $23,000.

The base price of the RAV4 is $16,348. Added on our test vehicle was the all weather package $70, air conditioner $985, tilt wheel $170, and an upgraded stereo with cassette for $515. Add in destination charges of $420 and you get $18,508. A value for best in class performance.
