1997 Honda Passport

Honda has built its reputation on dependable and high quality vehicles. The Honda Passport, while well built, just doesn't measure up. Why? The reason is simple: it really isn't a Honda. The Passport is a rebadged Isuzu Rodeo.

At the time Honda made the agreement with Isuzu, they didn't have any products in the lucrative sport-utility market. The partnership with Isuzu was the only choice available. All other Asian manufacturers have SUV's and don't want to share with Honda. What was in the deal for Isuzu? They got a rebadged version of the Honda Odyssey minivan, known as the Oasis. Isuzu got the better end of the deal.

Now that Honda has the new mini-SUV, CR-V, the Passport should be quietly put out to pasture. The CR-V was designed and is manufactured by Honda. The only other choice for the Passport is for a closer relationship between Isuzu and Honda. If Honda had input from the beginning for a redesign of the Passport/Rodeo, I'm sure it would be a much better vehicle.

Mechanically, the Passport featured a 3.2L, V6 connected to a 4-speed automatic transmission. It has easy to use shift-on-the-fly 4-wheel drive system and protective skid-plates for those rare off-road occasions. Safety features include dual airbags, side impact door beams and rear anti-lock brakes. The interior included air conditioning, power windows, power locks, cruise control, 60/40 fold-down rear seats, rear window defroster and two piece tailgate.

Base price for the evaluated Passport was $26,000. Optional equipment included floormats, roof rack and a cargo net. With options and destination, the total price as tested was $26,738; competitive in the market for compact-SUV's.

Mileage ratings for the Passport are 15 mpg city and 18 mpg highway. During my week long drive, I achieved 15 mpg. The engine seemed a bit weak and more throttle input seemed to be required to get it moving. Doing this resulted in lower than normal gas mileage.

The Honda Passport is not a bad vehicle overall, it just shouldn't be a Honda.
