While spending some time in Europe several months ago, I learned to accept certain facts of life such as manual transmissions and tight fitting economical cars. Furthermore, I must tell you about my experience of being invited by a bunch of my sons' friends to play basketball. When these towering youngsters showed up to pick us up, I sought the opportunity to redeem my self. Prior to the defeat, I thought, "they'll beat me in basketball, and I'll impress them with my knowledge about cars!" However, I must admit I was the one impressed with their car, the Ford Focus. Immediately, I noticed the relatively spacious interior room, and the ease of entrance by my 6 feet rivals. Actually, I squinted as they quickly jumped in thinking that for sure they will bump their head. Not only was the entrance graceful, but much to my dismay, they still had ample head room once situated in the car. To strike an interesting conversational topic I started to comment on their newly purchased vehicle. I was then informed about the numerous European awards it has won, as well as its "social desirability" by many.

Granted, the Ford Focus seems to stand higher for a car of its size, but this compliments its "retro new-edge" styling. Performance was superb, especially on those winding and sometimes heart-stopping European roads. Body lean was minimal, even with a full load.

Sitting in the rear seat, I marveled the ergonomic layout of the interior, given a car in its class.

Ford offers this unique subcompact package in three body styles: a hatch-back, sedan and station wagon. Standard in the LX and SE 4 door sedan is the 4 cylinder 2.0-liter engine that produces 110 horsepower.

If possible, one should opt for the 16 valve 2.0-liter ZETEC engine which produces 130 HP. Both engines are available with a 5-speed manual transmission or 4 speed automatic. Base price range is between $11,900 to $15,380.

Not bad for a car that, unlike myself, managed to beat its rivals in crucial areas such as leg room, headroom, trunk space, great handling and improved safety options.
